Celebrating 30 Years of Canada's Constitution

A group watching Interim Leader Bob Rae speaking at the Charter Celebration webcast from Toronto.

The Leeds-Grenville Federal Liberal Association hosted a celebratory event on April 17th to mark the 30th anniversary of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Brockville resident Duncan Fraser provided a brief history of the Charter while others in attendance shared their memories of its official signing on Parliament Hill. Maureen Sampson recalled the importance of taking her children to Parliament Hill to witness the event. Riding President Margaret Fancy commented "The Charter has had a major impact on the promotion and protection of human rights in Canada. This is an occasion to not only remember its roots, but to celebrate its offer of fairness, justice and opportunity for all Canadians. Duncan Fraser shares a brief history lesson.

The evening was capped by the viewing of a webcast from Toronto featuring speeches by Interim Liberal Leader Bob Rae and former Prime Minister Jean Chretien. Rae presented Mr. Chretien with a "birthday card" signed by thousands of Canadians to commemorate the event. Rae noted: "The Charter has made Canada the envy of the world. Its promise of fairness, justice and opportunity is a beacon of hope that has drawn millions of new Canadians to our shores. Thirty years ago, it was a passionate and determined Liberal Minister of Justice named Jean Chrétien, working alongside Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, who enshrined in the Charter our most cherished Canadian values."
