Leeds-Grenville Federal Liberal Association

Federal Liberal Biennial Convention

A strong team of over 20 delegates, both young and older, attended the highly successful biennial Liberal Policy Convention, January 13-15, 2012 in Ottawa.  Of the 3,272 attendees at the convention, a third were under 30 years of age.  A live feed was made available to all Canadians via the web.

In addition to electing a new president of the Party and its officers, a number of policy resolutions and changes to the way the Party will govern itself were passed.  A record of these can be found here.

A key change to the governing structure is the introduction of a new level of involvement with the Liberal Party:  "supporter status".  Among other benefits, supporters will be permitted to vote on the selection of the next Leader of the Liberal Party.

Policy resolutions included the firm support for the use of Preferential ballots, both within the party and during federal elections.  A preferential ballot, where electors are given the ability to specify their first, second, etc. choice, is currently used within the party to select candidates within each riding.

If you wish to join or renew your membership, you can do so online at www.Liberal.ca.  Stay tuned for further information about becoming a "supporter"!

The Honourable Stéphane Dion visited Leeds-Grenville November 20th and 21st.

The Honourable Stéphane Dion recently spent two days in the Brockville area.  His visit began November 20th with a presentation to Transition Brockville (formerly the Brockville Climate Action Group) where he emphasized that current international trade rules need to be changed so that countries that take strong actions are rewarded.  He noted that: “if you want to change the world, you need to change the rules”.  See here for a newspaper article which covers this talk.

Mr. Dion spoke to a packed audience of enthusiastic Liberals and friends at the Brockville Country Club later in the afternoon.  He discussed the growing need for spending decisions by the federal government that address health care and help families having a hard time making ends meet.

The following morning he travelled to Athens to participate in the Student Parliament at Athens District High School.  There he encouraged students to get involved in civic affairs, and answered questions on a wide range of issues, including health care, and pharmaceutical policy.  After this he made a well received presentation to the Probus Group on the Clarity Act.
